Manufacturing EarthShell®
The manufacturing process for EarthShell products is very much like making waffles. The abundant and renewable ingredients (primarily limestone, starch, water and fiber) are mixed together, resulting in a “batter” which is placed between two heated molds. The water in the batter turns to steam, raising the pressure in the molds. This forms and sets the products, which are then protected with a biodegradable coating to enhance performance.
This patent-protected manufacturing process has been specifically designed to reduce the environmental burdens common to disposable food packaging. Compared to traditional paper, plastic and foam disposables, the environmental advantages of EarthShell’s technology include:
- Requiring less total energy to make
- Generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions
- Using fewer fossil fuels in production
- Producing lower amounts of a wide variety of air and water emissions
